This template should not be used in citation templates such as Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2, because it includes markup that will pollute the COinS metadata they produce; see w:Wikipedia:COinS.

ContextObjects in Spans (COinS) is a method of embedding latent OpenURL ContextObjects in web pages.

This template provides way to wrap wiki markup in (single) square brackets. More importantly, it helps to keep the markup free of line noise and thus easier to edit.
